In a neighbourhood in Milan, a man and a tree have lived side by side for almost 60 years. The man is the owner of a poultry shop and is known throughout the city. The tree, a majestic sycamore, has become a landmark in the area. Now, however, the tree is diseased and has to be felled. And the man, Dorando Giannasi, writes a farewell letter to his life-long companion. The story, in which recollections of the past alternate with moments of lyrical intonation, highlights not only the bond between the entrepreneur and the sycamore but between the latter and the entire community. And it reveals the value of trees as a source of nourishment, protection, sociality, and a symbol of harmony and continuity among generations.
