TXL: the airport code for Berlin Tegel. TXL—three letters that paved the way for two young graduates to a globally recognized career in architecture. In 1965, two newly qualified German architects won an international competition for Berlin’s new Tegel Airport with a groundbreaking design. Their fame was established. Their futuristic building, featuring octagonal shapes that minimized the distance between arrival and the aircraft, served as a blueprint for new airports worldwide for decades.
In 2020, Tegel TXL made way for the new Willy Brandt Airport. This story is a colorful and inspiring look back at a time when anything was still possible for young architects.
